Hong Kong (香港, xiāng gǎng) – better known as Hong Kong SAR – has many facets: it is one of the largest financial centers in the world, modernity hides a surprisingly traditional culture, the population of seven million is sophisticated and well-informed compared to its mainland cousins, the press is relatively free and there are many beaches with transparent waters and waterfalls hidden in the forest.

  • Language: Cantonese and English
  • Currency: Hong Kong has its own currency, the Hong Kong dollar, which is pegged at around $8 against the US dollar and is therefore currently worth slightly less than the Chinese yuan.
    Yuan cannot be used officially in Hong Kong, although some stores accept them.
  • Travel Visa: Brazilian citizens do not need a visa to enter the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Region if their stay is less than 90 days.
    If you intend to visit mainland China, you will need a visa, which must be obtained in Brazil.
  • Travel insurance: It is not compulsory to enter the country, but it is recommended.

  • When to go: The best time to visit Hong Kong is from October to early December, when the weather is sunny, cool and pleasant.
    Hong Kong has a subtropical climate influenced by the monsoons.
    It is mild for more than half the year.
    There are mild, relatively dry winters and hot, humid summers.
  • Safety: Hong Kong is quite safe, but there can be some minor crimes such as thefts and muggings.
    Serious crimes are rare, especially against tourists.
    Even so, it is always advisable to be vigilant to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.
  • Socket type: The standard for sockets in Hong Kong is the same as in the UK, with three flat pins forming a triangle.
    The mains supply is 220V, 50Hz.
