Chapada dos Veadeiros Goiás

Mystical, with majestic waterfalls and rock formations dating back millions of years, the Chapada dos Veadeiros is one of the best-known regions of the Brazilian cerrado and was declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.
The region covers an area of more than 240,000 hectares in the state of Goiás, including the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park.
It is a destination for adventure and inner connection.

OVERVIEW

  • When to go: You can visit Chapada dos Veadeiros all year round.
The dry season runs from May to October and the rainy season from November to April.

    • April and May are great months to visit the Chapada with the waterfalls still full, as it’s just after the end of the rainy season.
  • Where to stay: the three main cities to stay in are Alto Paraíso, São Jorge and Cavalcante, which include most of the region’s attractions, including the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park.
  • How to get there
    • By car: Brasília is the city with the closest airport for those coming from other states.
From the airport it’s easy to rent a car and drive along the BR-010 highway for 220km to Alto Paraíso.
To Cavalcante or São Jorge, the journey continues for a few more kilometers.
    • By bus: there is a direct bus line from Brasília’s Interstate Bus Station to Alto Paraíso de Goiás.
The route is operated by viação Real Expresso, takes about 4h30 and costs R$52.80 (as of Apr/2021).
São Jorge and Cavalcante do not have direct buses from Brasília, so you will have to get off at Alto Paraíso to continue your journey.
    • Hitchhiking: it’s very common to hitchhike in the Chapada and there are even some Facebook groups dedicated to this, such as Carona Solidária Chapada dos Veadeiros.
Another alternative is the international hitchhiking app BlaBla Car.
  • How to get around: the ideal is to have a car, preferably a 4×4.
Public transportation to the attractions is non-existent.
Hiring an agency to do the tours, a guide with a car or hitchhiking are other options.
  • How many days to stay: the more the better!
4 days is the minimum we recommend to get to know some of the main attractions around a single base.
From 7 to 10 days you can enjoy the trails and waterfalls around the different towns with more peace of mind.
  • Cell phone connection: within the cities, the connection works well for practically all operators, but if you take the highway, the signal becomes non-existent.
Don’t forget to download GoogleMaps offline.
  • Money: practically every place in town accepts cards, while attractions must be paid for in cash.
Take enough cash for the whole trip, as there is only one Itaú in Alto Paraíso and no bank in São Jorge.
